The City of Medan

Medan is the capital city of North Sumatra province of Indonesia, and the largest city in Sumatra. It is located in the north of the province. The city is Indonesia's third most populous after Surabaya and Jakarta, with approximately 2.5 million people. Medan means "place" in Indonesian and Malay languages. There are many older buildings in Medan that still retain their Dutch architecture. Some buildings are: the old City Hall, Post Office Center, Water Tower which has been Medan City's icon, and Titi Gantung - a bridge over railway. There are several historic places such as Maimun Palace and the Great Mosque (Masjid Raya) of Medan. The newest food court in central of Medan city is Kesawan Square. Many kinds of Indonesian, Western and Chinese cuisine become special interest. One of the unique features of Medan are the motorized "becak" that are found almost everywhere. Unlike traditional "becak", a motorized becak can take its passenger to anywhere in the city. There are also more common transport like taxis and minibuses.
There are three most favourite tourist destination in North Sumatra, Lake Toba and Samosir Island in it, Bukit Lawang and Brastagi. Most of the people who live around Lake Toba and North Sumatra are ethnically Batak. Traditional Batak houses are noted for their distinctive roofs (which curve upwards at each end, like a boat's hull does) and their colorful decor.
Bukit Lawang is a great riverside resort town hugging the border on Gunung Leuser Park. From here here you can hike into Gunung Leuser, tubing down the river, or just lazily swim in the river. In Gunung Leuser, you might see orangutan, gibbons, and heard Thomas Leaf monkey. It is hard to hiking up and down forested ridges especially when rainy days, but it is definitely worth it.
Brastagi is a small city under the Gunung Sibayak. While here you might climb volcano Sibayak, golfing or just relaxed at a spa.
